Liu Qiang(刘强), ethnic Han, CCP Member, researcher, tutor of ph.d. students, is Doctor of Medicine in Peking Union Medical College and at present holds the post of Director of Radiation Hazard Evaluation Research Office of CAMS Institute of Radiation Medicine with study on the tumor radiation sensitization and injury repair of stem cells as his major research direction. 

At present he also holds concurrent posts of vice chairman of Youth Committee of Radiological Health Professional Committee of Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), member of CPMA Radiological Health Professional Committee, member of Radiological Medicine and Protection Branch of Chinese Medical Association (CMA), member of Radiation Toxicology Professional Committee of Chinese Society of Toxicology (CST), member of the Radiation Disease Diagnostic Standard Committee, Ministry of Health, member of Tianjin Preventive Medicine Association, leader of internal medicine team of medical emergency rescue squad for nuclear accident, Ministry of Health, editorial board member of Chinese Journal of Radiological Medicine and Protection, standing member of editorial board of Chinese Journal of Current Traditional and Western Medicine and Chinese Journal of Practical Medicine. Besides, since 2007 he has been selected to peer review expert group of Brit Med J, Environ Sci Pollut Res, Int J Radiat Biol and J Soil Sedim. 

As the project leader, he took charge of over 10 scientific research projects of national, provincial and ministerial level, thereinto including national 709 scientific research special funds, health industry funds, national standard of Ministry of Health, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), research funds for doctoral program in colleges and universities by Ministry of Education, surface and key projects of Tianjin natural science funds and key project of Tianjin science and technology support program, etc. 

In recent 5 years, he has published more than 40 papers as the first or corresponding author, 15 of which were included in SCI. He was rewarded with 2 second prizes and 4 third prizes of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize and 2 third prizes of CPMA Science and Technology Award, 1 third prize of CMA Science and Technology Award, 2 outstanding achievement awards of Peking Union Medical College of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and obtained 2 patents. He was rewarded with outstanding young scientist award by Asian Association for Radiation Research in 2013, with “May 1st Labor Medal”by Tianjin Federation of Trade Unions in May 2009, with “outstanding youth of Nankai District in Tianjin”by Committee of Communist Youth League in Nankai District in Tianjin and Tianjin Youth Fideration in 2008 and was praised as outstanding Party member by CAMS Peking Union Medical College and Tianjin education system in 2011 and 2012, and was praised as outstanding young scientist of CAMS Peking Union Medical College in 2012 and was praised as advanced scientist of Radiology Institute during “the 11th Five-Year Plan”in 2010. 

Since 2008 he has undertaken teaching task to graduates in Peking Union Medical College mainly responsible for Fundamentals of Radiation Protection and Radiation Biological Dosimetry. He is a tutor of 8 graduates and 4 doctor graduate students.

He attended international congress organized by APEC, WHO, IAEA and ICEM as the special guest for many times and gave the congress report. He was rewarded with outstanding young scientist on the 2nd ICEM held in Thailand in 2010 due to his research paper; he was rewarded with outstanding young scientist on the 10th ICEM held in Italy in 2009; he was rewarded with the best poster award on the 5th ASIA-TOX held in Taiwan in 2009; his research paper was rewarded with the second prize for outstanding paper on the 4th National Academic Cnference of CPMA Radiological Health Professional Committee in 2007 and the third prize for outstanding paper on the Academic Annual Conference of Tianjin Third Institute of CAMS Peking Union Medical College in 2010.

He was mainly engaged in radiation biology foundation and clinical work since entering into work. In studies of quick classification diagnosis at the early stage for the injured in nuclear radiation emergency, he combined multiple indicators like clinical feature, cell and molecular level, made use of the sick time, lymphocyte count, chromosomal aberration, micronucleus rate and DNA double-strand breaks level of exposed patient into the matching of dose-response curve, combined multiple indicators and developed the computer software for quick classification diagnosis at the early stage for the injured; the related achievements was rewarded with the second prize of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award. 

Funded by Tianjin Natural Science Foundation and NSFC, he launched researches on radiation sensitivity evaluation of tumour cell and radiation sensitization treatment; adopted the quantitative analysis of tumour cell DNA damage and deletion detection of mitochondria DNA specific segment to evaluate the radiosensitivity of tumour cell, and synthetized ANTP-Smac N7 and Tat-SamcN7 fusion peptide to carry on the radiation sensibilization research of tumour cell. In the above-mentioned research, he made innovative improvements to the key technology of unicellular gel electrophoresis and finally solved the degumming problem in experiment; the related achievements were rewarded with Tianjin Science and Technology Achievement Award.

He applied the umbilical cord MSC to transplantation therapy experiment of animal intestinal radiation damage, observed the therapeutical effect of stem cell transplantation (SCT) on intestinal radiation damage in mice, and found after the transplantation of human umbilical cord MSC, human MSC can transplantate and survive in the intestinal mucosa of mice, significantly improved the mice’s symptoms of intestinal radiation damage and survival rate, proving that human MSC helps the repairment after the injury of the intestinal mucosa of mice. The research provides scientific basis for MSC to apply to SCT for human intestinal acute radiation sickness. As transplant donor, human umbilical cord MSC has a wide variety of sources, convenient for collection and can be used in commercial process with an extremely little immunogenicity and evident clinical application advantages, predicting that it may play a great role in the clinic treatment to acute radiation damage in the future.
